Why Fall Is the Best Time to Seal Your Concrete in Central NY
Every spring, we get calls from homeowners around Syracuse asking why their driveway or patio is flaking, pitting, or cracking after the winter. Most of the time, the answer is the same: the concrete went into winter unsealed.
If your concrete hasn't been sealed in the last two to three years, fall is the time to do it — and in Central NY, the window closes fast.
What winter actually does to concrete here
Syracuse is one of the snowiest cities in the country, and it's not the snow itself that does the damage — it's the freeze-thaw cycle. Water soaks into the surface of unsealed concrete, freezes, and expands. Then it melts and soaks in deeper. Over a Central NY winter, that cycle repeats dozens of times, and each one pries the surface apart a little more. That's where spalling (surface flaking) and pitting come from.
Road salt makes it worse. Deicing salt tracked in on your car or spread on walkways draws more moisture into the concrete and attacks the surface chemically. Driveways near the street and garage aprons usually show salt damage first.
What sealing does
A quality sealer soaks into or coats the surface and blocks water and salt from getting in. For stamped and decorative concrete, it does double duty — it also deepens the color and keeps your patio looking the way it did the day it was poured. An unsealed stamped patio fades and wears years sooner than a sealed one.
Why fall, specifically
Sealer needs dry conditions and daytime temperatures roughly in the 50s or warmer to cure properly. In Central NY, that means late September through October is the sweet spot: warm enough to cure, but ahead of the first hard freezes and the first salt truck. Wait until November and the weather usually won't cooperate; wait until spring and the damage from this winter is already done.
One note if your concrete is new: fresh concrete should cure for about a month before sealing. If we poured your patio or driveway this summer, it's ready now — which is exactly why fall is when we do most of our sealing work.
How often should concrete be resealed?
For most driveways, patios, and walkways in the Syracuse area, every 2–3 years keeps the protection intact. If water no longer beads on the surface after rain, it's due.
